Ernst Röhm, commander of the Sturmabteilung (Storm Battalion), or the SA, or the brownshirts. The SA was slightly wild. Rumor has it SA leadership were all gay, stemming from an intense misogyny and reverence for masculinity. They allegedly had drug-fueled orgies all the time. What’s not rumor is that Röhm was gay as the day is long.

Emmanuele Giri
("Laughing Giri," "Giri the Joker") Nathaniel Kohlmeier |
Hermann Göring, eventual Vice Chancellor to Hitler. He led the SS (Schutzstaffel) and the Gestapo (German Secret Police). He was an ace fighter pilot in World War I and
was something of a swashbuckling war hero in the interwar years. The historian Richard J. Evans said he was super hot and had a ton of game. |
Giuseppe Givola
("Clubfoot Giuseppe") Eleanor Sobczyk |
Joseph Goebbels, Minister for Propaganda. The historian Richard J. Evans always cites Goebbels’ diaries, where he often wrote of Hitler: "I love him." Goebbels was born with a club foot, which prevented him from serving in World War I. He would be Chancellor for a single day between his and Hitler’s suicides, since actual Vice Chancellor Göring made Hitler mad at the last second.

Paul von Hindenburg, Reich President from 1925 to his death in 1934. A disaster, like the blimp named in his honor. He was a beloved war hero for his service as general in the First World War and was popularly elected to the presidency at age 78, dying in office at 86.

Franz von Papen, Chancellor who preceded Hitler. He tried to fix the Reichstag’s hung parliament situation in 1933 by encouraging Hindenburg to replace him with Hitler, wrongly assuming Hitler could be controlled if the Nazi Party was given a role in the cabinet.

Courtney Reid Harris |
Engelbert Dollfuss, Chancellor of Austria who opposed Hitler. A dictator who also had to deal with Mussolini.

Marinus van der Lubbe, a Dutch communist who set fire to the Reichstag building. Many historians now accept that he was guilty, but Brecht would have believed widespread rumor that he was framed -- and it's still up for debate.
